methodology
What the report says, and what it leaves out.
The report is short on purpose. These are the rules it follows every day.
What the words mean
- Best
- The lowest price for a gallon of regular in that city's report for that day.
- Worst
- The highest price for a gallon of regular in the same report.
- Gap
- The worst price minus the best price, in cents a gallon. It is what a driver keeps on each gallon by choosing the best station over the worst.
The on-air rules
It names the best.
The report names the best price and the station that has it.
It never names the worst.
The report gives the worst price as a number. It never names the station that charges it.
Two real prices, nothing blended.
The report gives the best price and the worst price. It never rolls prices into one figure, and it never gives a typical or middle price.
How often
- There is one report per city, per day. Each report carries its date.
- If a city has no report for a day, its page says so, with the date. I never show an earlier day's price as today's.
- Members can ask for a report at any time, or set a morning delivery at an hour between 4am and 11am local time.
What is covered
Reports cover regular gas, priced per gallon.
One caution
A price can change during the day. Check the sign before you fill up.
